2016 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sweet Water completed the 2015 season with a 5-6 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 2A region one, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Sweet Water's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Elba by a score of 46-14. Sweet Water took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2001. The Bulldogs lost as many games as in any season since 2001. Since 2010, Sweet Water has gone a combined 56-24. Their 70.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 1A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Sweet Water has managed to compile a record of 196-105. Their 65.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 1A and 53rd in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Pat Thompson who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 13-10 over the past two seasons at Sweet Water. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Thompson. Coach Thompson's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 13-10 (56.5%). The Sweet Water Bulldogs will play in Class 1A region one during the 2016 season. The Bulldogs may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 2A to 1A. They will compete in region one this year. The Bulldogs should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Bulldogs have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2000 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Bulldogs return to 1A where they won five state championships in nine seasons before jumping to 2A. The Bulldogs open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Thomasville on Friday, August 26 at Anderson Field. Last year the Thomasville Tigers finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in second place in Class 4A region one. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Dadeville by a score of 54-53. Sweet Water and Thomasville have met a total of 78 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 14-63-1 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2015 with Thomasville winning by a score of 34-6. Sweet Water returns 2A All-State Senior defensive back Will Huckabee. He was named to the second team last season. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
